Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical Engineering ● Geo-Environmental Engineering ● Risk Assessment ● Design Reviews ● Safety Audits

Our extensive first-hand knowledge of the mining industry enables us to provide geotechnical engineering services for the evaluation and design of pit walls, waste dumps and tailings dams.  We also design instrumentation and monitoring programs to ensure the safety of geo-engineered structures during and beyond the mine’s operating lifespan.

We are literally leading the way to the future in such areas as mine waste management, mine closure, soft tailings issues and alternative tailings technologies.

Our geo-engineering group is actively involved in risk assessment work in North America and around the world, helping manage risk and maintaining the viability of operations.

We carry out design reviews and safety audits of mine structures from small water impoundments to major tailings dams and waste embankments.  Our teams work directly for operators to:

  • carry out internal reviews
  • act as independent third party reviewers for financial institutions, insurers and corporate acquisition groups, and
  • assist in developing optimal mining practices while ensuring stability of pit walls and waste dumps.

Case Study: Engineering

Returning an Offshore Platform to Production

Situation: Norwest Questa Engineering (NQE) evaluated the production potential of a client’s offshore platform which had been acting as a pumping station with abandoned wells due to the low oil prices realized several years ago. An economic evaluation showed that current oil prices would support returning the wells to production if a minimum productivity and reserve base could be realized.

Solution: NQE provided reservoir and production engineering support to the client staff for developing an improved geological model. Support included a detailed assessment of past performance. From this assessment, NQE targeted re-entries, predicted well deliverability, assessed production problems, and furnished data for facilities rehabilitation. In addition... read more>>
